OYSTERPRENE© : SOÖRUZ integrates oyster shell powder into the top-end wetsuits As part of the development of the Soöruz Ocean Protect label, our R&D department worked with its suppliers for 2 years to recycle oyster shells in the design of its suits.
Aware of the environmental impact of neoprene, for over a decade of years Soöruz is looking to reduce its environmental footprint by developing new materials from renewable and/or recyclable material. Soöruz wetsuits with bamboo and polyester recycled (2013), Yulex (2013) and Naturalprene (2016) have been major innovations. They comforted us with the possibility of making more sustainable wetsuits with higher performance.
Many wetsuits spotlight on an eco-friendlier material: the limestone, is a type of fossil coming from quarry. It limits the use of petrochemical materials, but it requires a very energy-intensive and nonrenewable extraction process.
In 2018, we carried out the first oyster shell crushing tests in France (in La Rochelle). Our search results enabled us to create 2 new materials : the BIÖPRENE mainly biobased (from a mix of oyster powder, natural rubber, sugar cane, none food vegetable oil) present in our new Greenline range (available from march 2020) and the OYSTERPRENE©, available from July 2020.
OYSTERPRENE © : SOÖRUZ integrates oyster shell powder into the top-end wetsuits
OYSTERPRENE© is used in our most flexible and efficient neoprene which are our expert and pro range (Guru, Abyss & Firehead).
The process consists in replacing the limestone by a natural, recycled and renewable product made from grinding of oyster shells. This solution allows us not to loose any of the wetsuits technical efficiency. While helping to improve our environmental footprint without additionnal cost to the customer.
We are pleased to make this innovation available for big market players, and proud to know that a major will rely on our technology from winter 2020.
Soöruz Mapping Environmental Performance vs Technical Performance
Available from July 2020
Oysterprene Y7 Megaflex:
Extreme flexibility and even lighter. Extreme shoulder mobility thanks to our new Y7-oysterprene.
It is made with less limestone and replaced by our oyster powder.
During the manufacturing process of nylon, we collect fresh nylon yarn scraps to make recycled nylon. This new material offers a better flexibility.
Storm-dry inner lining:
Inner lining made of recycled polyester : warm and fast-dry.
Optimized wetsuit weight, through the use of specific materials & choice of construction for performance.
LABEL OCEAN PROTECT
The aim of this label is to identify our most eco-responsible products and reduce our environmental footprint.
Currently present in 50% of our range, our objective is to reach a 100% in the coming years.
The label will evolve thanks to our will to be more and more demanding and innovative for the performance and protection of the oceans.
