How to choose wisely your surf Wetsuit : Follow our guide !
You are looking for a surf wetsuit and you need informations to help you find the right surf wetsuit ? Good news, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve prepared a little guide for you to help you choose your surf wetsuit and make sure you don’t get it wrong!
The elements that will help you choose the perfect surf suit
Know that to choose the right surf suit, there are features to know to make the right choice and find the right suit that really suits your needs. There are a lot of parameters to master but don’t be afraid, we have simplified the task for you and we avoid you long searches. You have everything you need here.
Here are the parameters to master in order to buy an ideal surf suit:
The thickness
One of the main criteria to consider is the thickness of the suit you need.
Surf suits have different thicknesses. You will often find the following thicknesses: 5/4/3mm, 4/3mm, 3/2mm, 2/2mm, 1mm (knowing that 5/4/3mm is the thickest and hottest, 1mm is the minimum thickness and the least hot).
Each thickness is therefore adapted to a season / water temperature. To make it simple, help yourself to the table below which recommends a combination thickness according to the temperature of the water in which you are about to go surfing!

The material
Know that when you buy a surf suit you will choose between different materials. Surf suits can be made of 3 different materials. There are 4: “traditional” neoprene, limestone, Naturalprene and Biöprene Soöruz.
Traditional” neoprene is the historical material used by surf brands. It has a big disadvantage: it is very polluting. Indeed to be produced it requires very toxic materials and emits a lot of CO2. It is also difficult to recycle. Good news, since then there have been some great developments and in particular the arrival of 3 more ecological materials: Limestone, Naturalprene and Biöprene.
The Limestone neoprene that comes from the limestone rock of Niigata in Japan. Originally, this limestone comes from the magma of a volcano near Hawaii that was dumped into the ocean 80 million years ago.
Naturalprene is a renewable and vegetable substitute for neoprene. It is made from the sap of a tree, “l’hevea” (grown responsibly in Guatemala in certified productions).
Biöprène Soöruz is the result of a new and even more eco-responsible recipe. It is made with a mixture of Natural Rubber (Hevea), sugar cane, Non-food Vegetable Oil and Oyster Shell Powder. It’s a Soöruz exclusive.
The quality
Choosing a surf wetsuit is like any technical product, choosing between different qualities. A “good wetsuit” will be stretch (flexible), comfortable (pleasant to wear, with good seams and that does not cause irritation). And a quality surf wetsuit is a durable suit. A good product can last you for years without really getting damaged!
The size
Choosing the right surf wetsuit is choosing the right size. For this reason you have size guides often available in stores or on websites. The size guides are specific to each brand. Our advice is still to try the wetsuit before buying, it allows you to see if it is the right size but above all to test and see its quality live!

The closures
For surfing wetsuits several locking systems exist. There are three that you will find on all the wetsuits:
- The Back zip: Closure at the back, in the center of the back. The main advantage of back zip surf wetsuits is that they are easy to put on. Surf wetsuits with back zip fasteners are often the most affordable.
- The Chest-zip: Closing at the front, located between the bottom of the neck and the top of the chest. This system allows less water infiltration. Wearing it is generally more comfortable. Choose zip front over your winter suits, it’s a real plus!
- The Zip-free: This is the latest system for closing surf wetsuits on the market. The Zip free simply allows you to have no zippers, scratches or buttons. The collar closes from the side thanks to an elastic system. The result: more comfort, more lightness, more flexibility and less sewing. It is used at Sooruz on combinations of our FIREHEAD/ABYSS, GURU and FIGHTER/DIVINEranges.
The design
Of course you’ll be interested in the look of the suit. What colours? Discreet? Flashs? Rather black? There are many different styles of combinations (and so much the better!). On the “design” criterion we can’t really help you, it’s the tastes and colours of everyone (*even if we admit that we love the red touchs of our new GURU PRO (it is unanimously accepted within the Sooruz team!)
Our advice, however, is not to put this design criterion before the others. A nice combination is cool but the quality must follow and allow you to surf without being embarrassed and without being cold!
The budget
The famous budget, let’s talk about it! You’ve probably already looked at the surf suits a little bit from right to left. You have certainly also noticed that prices vary according to the brands, according to the models. Choosing a quality surf wetsuit requires a certain budget. Let’s talk about investment.
Let’s say that a quality product may be a little more expensive to buy but will surely last longer. In terms of quality and comfort, it is sometimes day and night (hence our advice to try before buying).
At Sooruz we try to offer the best products at the best prices. We have been making surf wetsuits for more than 15 years, we have been able to develop our products and optimize them from year to year!
*The after-sales service
We often forget to mention this point, but we think it is essential. And yes, it can happen that a surf wetsuit gets damaged, torn. Let a seam jump. Or simply that there is a small manufacturing defect. How is it going? Let’s just say it’s at the discretion of the brand. Ask before you buy, don’t hesitate to ask the question before you buy!
At Sooruz, you can return your suits if necessary. We will do our best to repair it or if it is not possible we will exchange it for a new product.
Our warranty : 3 years warranty on all stiches , 1 year warranty on materials
“So that’s it for our advice on choosing the right surf suit. You now have all the cards in hand. It’s your turn to play!”
